I was walking home one afternoon Just a kid was in some fit of wondering what to do I painted gray the walls inside my tiny little room And listened as the trains would roll on through I made a couple friends beyond my street The three of us would laugh and cry and talk on anything And I never knew that I could feel like I was really me When I made the friends I made beyond my street You can grow up any time you please It happens when your eyes are closed and it floats off in the breeze And friends will die and there’s no why just a tearful wondering Why some of us stay here while others go Sometime I dream I’m sitting on your roof Your dad’s asleep and it’s just me in the dark there talking to you And the stars hang o’er the streetlights like a snowfall in July When I’m back there well everything’s just fine
